Our Story
As a happily married couple with a passion for wholesome living, we have always prioritised offering our family the healthiest food options available. Recognising the inherent sweetness of cacao, we embarked on a journey to discover its remarkable properties as a nourishing treat for our children. Our research led us to the rich history of cacao, dating back 5500 years to the Ecuadorian Amazon*, where it was revered as 'the food of the Gods' and utilised in sacred ceremonies. Inspired by its nutritional and medicinal significance, we founded Cacao Culture with the vision of creating a community of mindful individuals who appreciate the importance of nourishing their minds and bodies with wholesome foods.

Cacao is renowned for its plethora of health benefits, including mood elevation, cognitive enhancement, immune system support, stress reduction, and memory improvement. Moreover, cacao serves as an excellent alternative to coffee, providing sustainable energy and a mild stimulant effect without the adverse effects associated with caffeine.

We invite you to embark on a journey of wellness and discovery with Cacao Culture.

With love,
Kate and Mac from Cacao Culture

General Cacao Qustions

What is Cacao?

Originating in the tropical rainforests of the South American Amazon, Cacao (pronounced: KA-COW) comes from the Cacao tree, which is scientifically known as Theobroma Cacao. This small, evergreen tree produces seeds or pods, which contain the raw ingredient used to make chocolate.

Is Cacao a superfood?

Cacao is considered a Superfood because it is packed with many beneficial nutrients, including: magnesium, iron, calcium, zinc and it is a rich source of antioxidants. It also contains high quantities of Theobromine – which has been shown to naturally lower blood pressure, and can potentially decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. It also improves blood flow, by opening up blood vessels and helping oxygen move more efficiently around the body – reducing the risk of blood clots.

Why Cacao?

Regarded by the Mayans as ‘The food of the Gods’, Cacao was highly prized by the native people and considered an important part of their culture – it was thought to have healing properties and was used in ceremonies, and even traded as a source of currency among tribes.

Why is Cacao a great coffee alternative?  | What is the difference between Cacao and Coffee?

Cacao is an excellent alternative to coffee because it is a great source of energy and it acts as a mild stimulant, without the adverse effects that caffeine has on the nervous system. Cacao produces a mild, long-lasting and more relaxing effect because it does not produce cortisol, which is considered a stress hormone that can make us feel anxious and nervous. Instead, Cacao makes us feel more relaxed and positively alert.

What is the difference between Cacao and Cocoa?

In its purest form, raw Cacao (pronounced CA-COW) contains many beneficial nutrients, including vitamins and essential minerals. On the other hand, Cocoa (pronounced CO-CO), is a byproduct of Cacao, which has been processed (usually through roasting or cooking).

Cocoa is commonly found in supermarkets and often used as a confectionery ingredient. However, it lacks the nutritious properties of Cacao – because the processing methods alter its molecular structure.

What sets organic cacao apart from conventional cacao?

Organic cacao is cultivated using organic farming practices, which means it is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It is also produced without the addition of artificial chemicals or preservatives. This ensures that organic cacao maintains its purity and is free from potentially harmful substances, making it a healthier and more environmentally friendly choice compared to conventional cacao.

Is organic cacao suitable for individuals with dietary restrictions or special diets?

Absolutely! Organic cacao is highly versatile and can be enjoyed by individuals with various dietary restrictions or special diets. It is naturally gluten-free, making it suitable for those with gluten intolerance or celiac disease. Moreover, organic cacao is free from dairy and animal products, making it an excellent option for vegans or those following a plant-based diet. However, it's always important to check the specific product labels to ensure it meets your dietary requirements.

How can I incorporate organic cacao into my daily routine?

Incorporating organic cacao into your daily routine is a delightful and easy task. You can use organic cacao powder to prepare delicious and nutritious smoothies, hot chocolate, or homemade energy bars. For an added crunch and flavor, sprinkle cacao nibs on top of your morning oatmeal or yogurt. Additionally, get creative by adding cacao to baked goods like cookies or brownies to create healthier and more indulgent treats. The possibilities are endless, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of organic cacao in a variety of creative and satisfying ways.
