FAQs

What is the difference between ceremonial cacao paste and powder?

Ceremonial Cacao Paste:

  • Composition: Made from whole cacao beans, including both the cacao solids and cacao butter.
  • Processing: The beans are ground into a paste and then often shredded or shaved for convenience.
  • Texture and Usage: The paste retains a rich, creamy texture due to the cacao butter content. It is often used in traditional ceremonies, hot chocolate drinks, or for culinary applications requiring a deep, complex flavour.

Ceremonial Cacao Powder:

  • Composition: Made by pressing the cacao beans to remove most of the cacao butter, leaving behind the cacao solids which are then finely ground into a powder.
  • Processing: The process involves separating the cacao butter and grinding the remaining solids.
  • Texture and Usage: The powder has a finer texture and is ideal for mixing into beverages, smoothies, and recipes where a less creamy, more concentrated cacao flavour is desired.

Both forms offer the benefits of pure ceremonial grade cacao, but the paste provides a richer texture and creaminess, while the powder offers versatility and ease of mixing.

What is the difference between ceremonial cacao and supermarket cacao?

Ceremonial grade cacao and cacao found in supermarkets vary in terms of quality, processing, and intended use. Ceremonial cacao is of higher quality, sourced from specific regions such as Peru with careful attention to cultivation practices. It undergoes minimal processing to preserve its natural properties and is traditionally used in ceremonies for its potential spiritual and mood-enhancing effects.

Supermarket cacao, on the other hand, may undergo extensive processing, including roasting and the addition of sugars or other ingredients. It is typically mass-produced and may not prioritise the ethical and sustainable sourcing practices associated with ceremonial cacao. The intended use of supermarket cacao is usually for culinary purposes rather than ceremonial or spiritual practices.

How is ceremonial grade cacao different from regular hot chocolate?

Ceremonial grade cacao differs from regular hot chocolate in terms of its purity and processing. Ceremonial cacao is minimally processed, free from additives, and often consumed in its raw form. Regular hot chocolate, on the other hand, undergoes extensive processing, including roasting, refining, and the addition of sugars and other ingredients.

What are the potential benefits of consuming ceremonial cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is believed to offer a range of potential benefits, including mood enhancement, increased focus, and a heightened sense of spiritual connection. The natural compounds present in ceremonial cacao, such as theobromine and phenylethylamine, may contribute to these effects. It's essential to approach ceremonial cacao with reverence and mindfulness to fully experience its potential benefits.

How is ceremonial cacao used in rituals and ceremonies?

Ceremonial cacao has a rich history of use in various rituals and ceremonies. It is often prepared as a warm beverage and consumed mindfully during ceremonies to enhance spiritual connection, focus, and introspection. The process of preparing and sharing ceremonial cacao is considered a sacred ritual in many traditions.

Can anyone consume ceremonial cacao?

While ceremonial cacao is generally safe for most people, it may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions or sensitivities. It's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating ceremonial cacao into your diet, especially if you have allergies, intolerances, or are taking specific medications.

How many servings are in each bag?

There are approximately 27 servings in a 330g canister and approx. 80 servings in a 1kg bag.

What is the recommended amount of cacao to consume?
